Luke and I were thrilled to spend a weekend in Montreal at the end of May. First of all, the weather was glorious-sunny, bright, and welcoming. Yay for the beginning of summery weekend trips! And Montreal really is something else when it comes to good eating. We had a incredible time for all of our meals. Starting with brunch at Le Cartet on Saturday morning. Situated in uber-charming Old Montreal, Le Cartet is such a stylish and funky little spot. When you walk in, you'll see high ceilings, shelves of gourmet food products, and a long, elegant dining area in the back. I ordered the Brunch Sante, which is basically my dream breakfast come true--all of my favourite foods on one plate. Poached eggs on artisanal bread, thick creamy yogurt topped with homemade granola and blueberries, slices of fresh fruit, and some wedges of cheddar with dried figs.

Luke wanted slightly heartier fare, so he opted for the Brunch Canton, which included a sizzling cast-iron pan full of scrambled eggs, baked beans, sausage, bacon, and some home-fries. No really. These were the best breakfasts ever. Coming with fresh-squeezed orange juice and an amuse-bouche of little apple-squares, and finished off with americanos, we were well fortified for a day of strolling and shopping in Montreal's fabulous shops and cafes. Even though it is a pricy spot, I would highly recommend Le Cartet to anyone wanting a slightly elevated brunch experience.
Even though I don't have pictures of it, on Saturday night we ate at Le Continental, a fantastic bistro. I had grilled calamari and a warm goat cheese salad, and Luke had the t-bone steak. Everything was beautifully served and so delicious. The next morning, after a day of rich food, we opted for a picnic in Mont Royal, complete with fresh sesame seed bagels (the photo at the top of this post), cream cheese, yogurt, some fancy-pants artisanal granola that had chocolate in it (oh la la) and fresh berries.
This breakfast might have been my favourite meal of all.

We can't wait to go back!
